Ham on the Thanksgiving Table: To Eat Swine or Not to Eat Swine

Growing up I hated bacon and ham.  My grandmother seemed to cook some form of pig with most meals and it was either the salt or the chewy-nature of the way that she cooked it that made me cringe every time I smelt it wafting through her home.

Many years and four kids later my taste buds have changed.   I like crunchy bacon, honey-ham and the smell of maple and bacon being fried up with eggs (which I also did not like as a child).    My children talk about all of the fun bacon recipes that are out there including the bacon cookies that we recently baked.  Bacon is good.  Ham is a holiday staple.

There's a Facebook page that I really like to follow.  The page posts a lot of interesting short videos that makes faith easy to follow for non or new-believers.  There are pictures of verses that lift us up.  There are funny cartoons and other interesting tidbits that get a person thinking more deeply about their stances.  There are also many memes about how much this person who runs this page is against bacon, swine, pig, ham, whatever term you may want to use.

Today the page posted the following picture which got me to research a little and think about what he is saying.

The Old Testament had a lot of rules and laws.  Many were very good.  Many seemed too hard for people to follow.  People fell away from the law many times.  God knew well in advance that people would fall away, but because He loved people so very much he extended His grace and mercy on them and gave them a chance to clean up their acts.  God knew that eventually there would be a need and time for a Savior. With the coming of Christ we learned that a lot of the old rules and laws were no longer necessary for eternal life.  The New Law did take from the old law when it came to murder, adultery, other sexual sins, idolatry and all of the Ten Commandments, but most we no longer needed to follow.  All we really need to follow is Christ.

People can do a simple search through the New Testament and see that eating certain foods is not an issue any longer.  In my opinion, I believe that all people before the Fall were vegetarians.  So when it comes down to it, maybe that's the only right way to go, but then that makes every single person ever since Adam and Eve in very deep trouble for what we have been putting into our bodies.  With all of that aside, here is what a few passages in the New Testament say and confirm that the eating swine is no longer a sin:

1 Corinthians 10: 24-26
Let no one seek his own good, but that of his neighbor. Eat anything that is sold in the meat market without asking questions for conscience' sake; FOR THE EARTH IS THE LORD'S, AND ALL IT CONTAINS.…

1 Timothy 4:1-5
Now the Spirit expressly says that in latter times some will depart from the faith, giving heed to deceiving spirits and doctrines of demons, speaking lies in hypocrisy, having their own conscience seared with a hot iron, forbidding to marry, and commanding to abstain from foods which God created to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and know the truth. For every creature of God is good, and nothing is to be refused if it is received with thanksgiving; for it is sanctified by the word of God and prayer .

Hebrews 9:28
so Christ was sacrificed once to take away the sins of many; and he will appear a second time, not to bear sin, but to bring salvation to those who are waiting for him

When Christ died on the cross the New Law went into affect and we were washed from our sins.  In the end we will be judged by this and not the old laws of Moses' time.

I know that the above is nothing profound and people are going to eat what they want regardless of what is written.  I needed to confirm for myself that I am not over-stepping my faith and doing something against God.

With all that said, this is what is on my menu for my Thanksgiving meal:

Turkey
Ham
Mashed Potatoes
Sweet Potatoes
Green Beans
Bread
More Bread
Pumpkin Pie
Apple Pie
